01 · Introduction

Introduction to IPTV

In short

IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) delivers television over an internet connection instead of an aerial, dish or cable. You need broadband, a compatible device, player software, and a legitimate source of content.

Millions of UK households already use IPTV every day through BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and Freely. This guide shows you how to set up your IPTV UK subscription — the IPTV UK app plays the playlists and programme guides you're entitled to use — properly on each type of device.

IPTV UK provides the IPTV UK subscription and guidance only. We don't supply channels or playlists, and nothing in this guide should be used to access content without the rights holder's permission. A TV Licence is required to watch or record live TV on any device in the UK.

02 · Technology

How IPTV technology works

A programme takes four steps to travel from a broadcaster to your screen.

Step 1 · Compression

Encode

The programme is compressed with a codec such as H.264, HEVC or AV1.

Step 2 · Segments

Package

Video is cut into short segments listed in an HLS or DASH manifest.

Step 3 · CDN

Deliver

Segments travel across the internet, cached on servers near you.

Step 4 · Your device

Play

The player buffers, decodes and displays them, adapting quality to your connection.

04 · Software

IPTV software and player compatibility

There are two kinds of IPTV software. Service apps — BBC iPlayer, ITVX, your broadband provider's TV app — come with their own content. Independent apps such as the IPTV UK app supply the interface and play sources you add yourself.

Formats the IPTV UK app supports

  • M3U / M3U8 playlists — loaded from a URL or a local file.
  • HLS and MPEG-TS streams referenced in those playlists.
  • XMLTV programme guides, including compressed .xml.gz files.

What a playlist looks like

An M3U playlist is a plain text file. Each entry has an information line and a stream address:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="example.news" tvg-name="Example News" group-title="News",Example News
https://streams.example.com/news/index.m3u8

The tvg-id value links the channel to its listings in the programme guide. The example uses the reserved example.com domain and is for illustration only.

What is an EPG?

An EPG is the on-screen TV schedule. In IPTV players it is loaded from an XMLTV file and matched to your playlist's channels by their tvg-id.

Setting up the guide

  1. Copy the XMLTV URL supplied by your content service.
  2. In the player, open Settings → Programme guide and add the URL.
  3. Choose a refresh interval — once a day is usually enough.
  4. Wait for the first download to finish, then open the guide.
  5. Map any channels showing "No information" manually.

GMT and BST

XMLTV times include a time-zone offset, so the player converts them automatically when the clocks change. Keep your device on UK time and any manual offset at zero.

Read the full guide to EPGs.

06 · Installation

Installation and configuration guides

Install only from official app stores. Choose your device:

Smart TV (Samsung, LG, Hisense)

  1. Connect the TV to your network, preferably by Ethernet.
  2. Open the TV's app store: Samsung Apps, LG Content Store or VIDAA Store.
  3. Search for the player, confirm the publisher name, and install.
  4. Open the app and enter your licence activation details.
  5. Add your playlist URL and XMLTV guide URL.

Android TV & Google TV

  1. Open Google Play (or Apps → Search for apps on Google TV).
  2. Search for the player and select Install.
  3. Open the app; grant only permissions it genuinely needs.
  4. Activate your licence, then add playlist and guide sources.
  5. Optional: enable Match frame rate in the device's display settings.

Amazon Fire TV

  1. Press Home, then select Find (the magnifying glass).
  2. Search for the player and choose Get or Download.
  3. Open the app and activate your licence.
  4. Add your playlist and XMLTV guide details.
  5. Turn on Display & Sounds → Display → Match Original Frame Rate.

iPhone, iPad & Apple TV

  1. Open the App Store and search for the player.
  2. Check the developer name, then tap Get.
  3. Open the app and activate your licence.
  4. Add your playlist and guide. On iPhone you can paste URLs directly.
  5. Use AirPlay or picture-in-picture where the app supports them.

Android phones & tablets

  1. Open Google Play and search for the player.
  2. Install and open the app.
  3. Activate your licence.
  4. Add playlist and guide sources — pasting from your email is easiest.

Windows & macOS computers

  1. Download the player from the Microsoft Store or Mac App Store.
  2. Open the app and activate your licence.
  3. Add playlist and guide sources; a computer is the easiest place to check and edit long URLs.

Avoid installing apps from unknown sources or buying "fully loaded" devices. Apps outside official stores aren't checked for security, and devices sold with unlicensed channels are illegal in the UK.

07 · Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting

Work through these steps in order — most issues are solved by the first two.

Buffering or stuttering

  1. Run a speed test from the device itself.
  2. Switch to Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and move closer to the router.
  3. Restart the router and device.
  4. In the player, try switching between hardware and software decoding.
  5. If only one stream is affected, the problem is likely at the source — contact that content service.

Programme guide is empty

  1. Confirm you've added the XMLTV URL that belongs to your playlist.
  2. Refresh the guide manually and wait for it to finish downloading.
  3. Check that channel tvg-id values match the guide's channel ids.
  4. Use manual channel mapping for any that still don't match.

Guide times are wrong

  1. Set the device time zone to London / United Kingdom with automatic time on.
  2. Reset any guide time offset in the player to 0.
  3. Refresh the guide — XMLTV times include their own GMT/BST offset.

Playlist won't load

  1. Check the URL for typos; copy and paste where possible.
  2. Open the URL on a computer to confirm it's reachable and starts with #EXTM3U.
  3. Ask your content service whether the playlist has expired or changed.

No sound or wrong language

  1. Open the player's audio track menu during playback and choose another track.
  2. Check the TV or soundbar isn't set to a format it can't decode; try PCM/stereo output.

App is slow or crashes

  1. Update the app and the device software.
  2. Clear the app cache (not data) from the device's app settings.
  3. Free up storage by uninstalling apps you don't use.
  4. Reduce the number of guide days stored in the player.

08 · FAQ

IPTV setup FAQ

How do I configure an IPTV player?

Install the player from your device's official app store, open it and activate your licence. Then add the playlist (an M3U or M3U8 URL or file) and the XMLTV programme guide URL provided by your content service, confirm the guide matches your channels, and set your device's time zone to the UK.

What is an EPG?

An EPG (electronic programme guide) is the on-screen schedule that shows what is on now and next. IPTV players usually load the guide from an XMLTV file and match it to channels in your playlist using each channel's tvg-id. Learn more about EPGs.

Which devices support IPTV software?

Most smart TVs (Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, Hisense VIDAA and Google TV models), Android TV and Google TV devices, Amazon Fire TV, Android phones and tablets, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and Windows or macOS computers. Always check the app is listed in the official store for your exact model.

What is an IPTV player?

An IPTV player is an application that plays television streams from playlists or logins you provide. It supplies the interface — channel list, guide, favourites and playback controls — but not the content itself. Read the IPTV player explainer.

What internet speed do I need?

As a guide, allow around 8 Mbps of stable throughput per HD stream and 20–25 Mbps per 4K stream, with headroom for the rest of the household. A wired connection to your main TV matters more than the headline speed of your package.

Why is my programme guide empty?

The most common cause is a mismatch between the playlist's tvg-id values and the channel ids in the XMLTV file. Check that you've added the guide URL supplied for that playlist, refresh it, and use the player's manual mapping for any channels that still don't match.
